Welcome to the Welsh Transplantation and Immunogenetics Laboratory website
This site provides information on the Welsh Transplantation and Immunogenetics Laboratory’s services supplied for the medical and scientific community around the world largely for the benefit of patients requiring an organ or bone marrow transplant.
Update notice:
Transplantation and Transfusion User Guides
Welsh Blood Service’s Transplantation Laboratory is implementing HistoTrac, a new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), as part of a planned modernisation of our laboratory services.
During the go-live period (16/02/2026 – 16/03/2026), service turnaround times will be impacted as we transition safely from our legacy systems.
To help minimise delays for urgent clinical work, we kindly ask that non-urgent requests are scheduled outside of the go-live period wherever possible. Urgent and emergency services, including on-call provision, will continue throughout.
Further information, including go-live phasing, service impacts, and resources, is available on our dedicated SharePoint page for external service users:
👉 Information and Support for External Users (Please note: this link is accessible to NHS Wales users only.)
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this important transition, which will support improved resilience, reporting, and future service development.
The Welsh Transplantation and Immunogenetics Laboratory was founded in 1974 within the Welsh Blood Service. The service is located near the village of Pontyclun a few miles to the north west of Cardiff, Wales’ capital.
The Welsh Transplantation and Immunogenetics Laboratory (WTAIL) operates the:
Welsh Histocompatiblity and Immunogenetics Service (WHAIS)
